Air Handling Units

An Air Handling Unit (AHU) is a fundamental component of a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system. Its primary purpose is to condition and circulate air to ensure a comfortable, healthy, and safe indoor environment. AHUs are the unsung heroes of modern buildings, working tirelessly behind the scenes in mechanical rooms or on rooftops, from small offices to large hospitals and industrial facilities.

Core Components and Their Functions

An AHU is essentially a large, sophisticated metal box that houses a collection of essential components, each with a specific role in the air treatment process. While the exact configuration varies, a typical AHU includes the following key sections:

  • Mixing Chamber: This is where fresh outdoor air is drawn in and mixed with return air from the building. This process helps balance ventilation requirements with energy efficiency, as reusing conditioned air reduces the load on the heating and cooling systems.

  • Filter Section: Air quality is paramount, and this section cleans the incoming air. Filters remove harmful fine dust, pollen, bacteria, and other contaminants, protecting both the occupants’ health and the internal components of the AHU.

  • Heating and Cooling Coils: These are the elements responsible for adjusting the air temperature. They contain hot water or steam for heating and chilled water or refrigerant for cooling. The air is passed over these coils to reach the desired temperature set point.

  • Humidification/Dehumidification Systems: To maintain comfortable and healthy humidity levels, AHUs can include humidifiers (which add moisture, often via steam or water spray) and dehumidifiers (which remove excess moisture through condensation).

  • Supply Fan: This powerful fan, often a centrifugal type, moves the conditioned air through the ductwork and into the building’s occupied spaces . The fan must overcome the resistance created by filters, coils, and the duct system itself.

  • Sound Attenuators (Silencers): The operation of fans can generate significant noise. Sound attenuators are installed within the AHU to reduce this noise, ensuring the system operates quietly.

  • Energy Recovery Components: To improve energy efficiency, many modern AHUs feature heat recovery systems . These systems transfer thermal energy from the outgoing exhaust air to the incoming fresh air, significantly reducing the energy required to heat or cool it. Common types include rotary heat exchangers (wheels) and run-around coil systems.

Types of Air Handling Units

AHUs are not a one-size-fits-all solution; they are available in various configurations to suit different applications, building sizes, and performance requirements.

  • Standard AHUs: The most common type, found in office buildings, schools, and retail spaces. They provide general-purpose air conditioning and ventilation.

  • Fresh Air Handling Units (FAHUs): Specifically designed to handle 100% outdoor air. They are ideal for applications like laboratories, parking garages, or areas with high exhaust requirements where air recirculation is not feasible or allowed.

  • Hygienic AHUs: These units are built with strict hygiene standards for environments like hospitals, pharmaceutical plants, and food processing facilities. They feature advanced filtration and sanitation systems to prevent contamination.

  • Heat Recovery AHUs: Equipped with heat recovery systems, these units are optimized for energy savings, especially in climates with extreme temperatures.

  • Packaged AHUs: Common as rooftop units, these are self-contained, pre-assembled units that include all components in one casing. They are popular for their compactness and lower initial cost, though they may be less efficient than larger, custom-built systems.

  • Modular/Custom AHUs: For large-scale or demanding applications, AHUs can be custom-designed. These units offer maximum flexibility in component selection and configuration and are often used in institutional or industrial settings where precise control is required.

    The Air Handling Process

The operation of an AHU is a continuous cycle:

    1. Intake and Mixing: The AHU draws in fresh outside air through a damper and mixes it with return air from the building .

    2. Filtration: The mixed air passes through a series of filters to remove airborne particles .

    3. Conditioning: The filtered air is then passed over the heating and/or cooling coils to achieve the desired temperature. It may also pass through a humidifier or dehumidifier to control moisture levels .

    4. Distribution: Finally, the conditioned air is pushed by the supply fan through the ductwork and into the various zones of the building. Dampers and Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes can then further control the airflow to individual rooms .

    Applications Across Industries

The specific requirements for an AHU depend heavily on its application. Different environments have unique needs :

    ApplicationKey Requirements
Offices & SchoolsGood air quality, temperature control for occupant comfort .
Hospitals & LabsHighest hygiene standards, precise temperature and humidity control, constant air changes .
Data CentersHigh cooling loads, energy efficiency, often use recirculation and free cooling methods .
Swimming PoolsDehumidification to prevent moisture damage and corrosion .
MuseumsExtremely stable temperature and humidity conditions to protect artifacts .
Industrial SettingsDefined climate control to ensure constant production quality .

In summary, the Air Handling Unit is the heart of a building’s respiratory system. By regulating temperature, humidity, and air quality, it ensures a safe and comfortable indoor environment for occupants while playing a critical role in the building’s overall energy performance .
